ISLAMORADA BRINGS WASTEWATER OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE IN-HOUSE
On March 12, 2018, Islamorada assumed operation and maintenance of the Village-wide wastewater collection and transmission system. The Village transitioned from a contracted provider to an in-house operation for Wastewater Operations and Maintenance services. The decision to transition to in-house operations was not due to poor performance of the current service provider, but an effort to achieve future cost-savings for Islamorada residents. Current staff of the contracted provider are well respected, and all were hired by Islamorada to form the new in-house crew.
Discussions between the Village Manager and Village Council regarding the transition began during the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Budget Workshops. Further consideration of the matter at a Regular Village Council Meeting in August 2017 included a friendly discussion with Wes Self, a Vice President with Reynolds Construction, LLC. Mr. Self has been involved with the Design/Build/Operate Agreement with Islamorada since the beginning of the “remaining service area” project and was supportive of the Village Council’s decision to take on the maintenance and operations of the “minimal risk system”.
The Village prepared for the transition to in-house operations and maintenance with the purchase vehicles and equipment that arrived before the March 12, 2018 transition date and by releasing a solicitation for Professional Contractor Services for the Wastewater System. The Professional Contractor Services will include professional electrical, plumbing and other contracted services that may be required for various maintenance and repair services.
Islamorada residents will not experience any changes when the transition occurs. The 24-hour emergency hotline number remains the same, the non-emergency number to the Wastewater Utility Department at the Administrative Center also remains the same.
